New Year's Resolution: Try Unplugging!

On January 4, 2007 I'll be celebrating one year without cable or satellite Tv service. That makes me a tiny unusual, to say the least.

According to the A.C. Nielson Company, the average American can be improbable to invest the equivalent of 2 full, nonstop months watching Tv next year, and a total of nine years in a 65 year lifetime.

That works out to about 4 hours per day.

Here is how I have spent the last 11 months.

(1) I wrote and published online and in former media more than 1,000 articles. The one you're reading right now is, in fact, amount 1,016.

(2) I vast the reach of my expert speaking and consulting practice, internationally.

(3) I worked out more at the Y.

(4) I read more books and newspapers.

(5) I was calmer.

I have to admit I bought a set of rabbit ears at the 99 Cent Store to pick up some local channels and Pbs stations. Because I got Abc, I saw a few big time college football games; at least part of them.

But overall, I may have watched 10 hours of Tv all year.

I subscribed to Netflix, the movies-by-mail company, only to find that after four months I checked out all of the best pictures ever made. I'm not kidding!

And now, I'm being solicited by cable and satellite clubs to come back, but a few things are keeping me away:

(1) I don't like paying for stuff I don't watch, feeling I must see junk just to recoup my monthly investment.

(2) I don't want to lapse into the 4 hour a day viewing habit. I can write an entire book, from scratch in two months, so I'll keep my time, instead.

For New Year's, you should try unplugging, just to see what you'll do with all of that extra time!
