2011 Fielding by Shortstop Garrett Deschamp. Despite the setback Garrett suffered from a painful right knee (later found to be cracked) during his 2010, Junior year in high school, Garrett has bounced back in his Senior year as evident in this short video of the last two games. Thanks to Orthopedic Surgeon, Dr. Brent Bankston at Baton Rouge Orthopedic and Physical Therapist, Beau Lowery. Some have a set belief in how a shortstop should look; ie athletic looking, chiseled face, average height, etc. Garrett is 6'2" 185lbs and reacts to the ball. His sure glove or bare hands, it doesn't matter. "Just make the play" is his motto. A phrase he borrowed from "Dizzy" Dean, "If you can do it, then it ain't braggin." He's been accused of showboating by bare handing balls but, it's simply making the play that counts in his mind. He hates to fail but he doesn't let failure stop him. He just doubles his effort for the next go around. At the age of four he'd practice catching the ball called "red", "white" or "blue" painted tennis balls as they were thrown into the air together...learning to react. A game played on long trips to his grandparents were opportunities to practice defensive strategies from the shortstop or pitching positions. He grew up in the small bedroom community of New Orleans, Meraux, La. in St. Bernard Parish.
